The Indigo Children for Elderly Care board is composed of six extraordinary women of color who bring diverse experiences, perspectives, and an unwavering commitment to their mission. As great-grandmothers, grandmothers, mothers, aunts, daughters, and sisters, they intimately understand the challenges families face when helping their elderly loved ones age in place with dignity.
Each board member draws on her unique background to guide Indigo’s strategic direction, governance, and impact. Collectively, they represent a wealth of expertise across public service, community engagement, business management, healthcare, affordable housing, and social work. Their deep connections to their communities and shared dedication to improving the lives of seniors fuel Indigo’s efforts to create lasting change.

As the CEO of Indigo Children for Elderly Care, Angela Smith combines a lifetime of personal experience with professional expertise to lead an organization committed to revolutionizing elder care in California. Her professional journey spans Pacific Bell, Time Warner Cable, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, AAA, and the State of California Labor Commissioner’s Office.
Nanyamka K. Culbertson is an Affordable Housing Development Assistant with more than four years of experience supporting the creation of quality, sustainable housing for families and seniors.
Khalilah Williams brings over two decades of professional nursing experience and has dedicated 23 years to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland.
Lavie Mitchell, BSN, RN, is a healthcare leader and certified Intrinsic Health and Wellness Coach with deep experience in case management, transitional care, and wellness-centered service.
Barbara Smith brings public service experience, caregiver insight, and decades of community involvement to Indigo’s mission.
Muriel Martin brings 30 years of service in Corrections, Parole, and Community Services, along with extensive leadership in civic and community organizations.
